As my first post, I wanted to discuss why being a freelance SEO has perks far outweighing any other SEO position. Though we all have to start somewhere, and sometimes the office gig has its perks as well, there simply isn't anything that compares with the freedom and flexibility that comes with working your own service.
1. Freelancers Do It Better
Sure, this seems more like an opinion than fact, but stick with me for just a second. I'm not saying that I, as a freelance SEO, am better than any other SEO. What I am saying is that we are allowed a luxury that firms do not provide their SEOs; movement. Having worked for other firms, I know that it takes time to change a process or procedure. Something new in Google maps that you should be working with? Have to run it by three other departments, consider the time it takes, consider monetizing it, etc. As a freelance SEO, you get to make those decisions on the fly. This grants us the ability to provide a more customized and attentive service to our clients.
I should point out that this really holds true for firms that started offering their SEO services after years of thinking about it. Like the design company that thought it may be a good idea to offer SEO for another stream of income. There are indeed "firms" that provide an incredible service, but from what I can tell they started in the SEO field from the start.
2. Freelance SEOs Have One Boss
And that's you. Again, I've worked for some really great guys (and gals), but in the end, you are relaying on their word and direction. Whether you agree or not, you have to do what you're told. As a freelance, you are your own boss. Now, this doesn't mean you get to play around all day. But it does mean you don't have to worry about being led by someone who can't spell SEO, let alone direct you.
3. The Paychecks Are Bigger
Think about it. Even if you charge the same prices as that big company down the road, you're still making out better than you would working for them. You see, they have bills to pay, rent, service fees of their own, etc. The owner has to get the new yacht (the old one was too small), whatever is left, you may have. As a freelance SEO, you get to keep a much larger chunk.
4. Freelance SEOs Have More Fun
Spend a moment on Twitter following all the SEOs you can. I can't go one day without Kid_Disco sharing some debauchery or another. Spend a few days at home on Twitter, and you'll see a trend. Freelance SEOs get to break whenever they want. Fell like taking a jog? Go to it. Want to get something to eat? Get your grind on. while our corporate peers are shoveling through paperwork, often missing lunches, we get to ride the wave of freedom and fun. Most of the time.
5. We Set Our Own Schedules
For some reason, full time organizations want to treat SEOs like workers on an assembly line. Get here at 8. Leave at 5. You get one lunch. That's it. As a freelance SEO you know that there's a job to be done. It might take a long time, it might be quick. Either way, you set the schedule. If you're more of a night person, you work at night. Just be mindful of any deadlines or calls. Don't want to mess that up.
So, there you have it. 5 Reasons to work as a freelance SEO.
